The Co-op Academy in Manchester’s Blackley area was the scene of a disturbing incident on Tuesday morning. A 14-year-old girl has been charged with three counts of attempted murder following a Knife Attack that left two students and a teacher injured. The Counter-Terrorism Policing North West is leading the investigation, although the incident has not been declared as terrorism-related.
The injured parties, a boy and a girl both aged 14, and a 27-year-old male staff member, have since been released from the hospital with no serious injuries. The suspect was initially detained under the Mental Health Act before being released to police custody. She is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
The Incident and Immediate Response
At approximately 08:30 BST on Tuesday, the school was placed under lockdown measures following the incident. The swift actions of the staff and the mature response of the pupils were commended by the school’s spokesperson. The suspect was charged with two additional counts of possessing a bladed article on school premises.
Within an hour of the stabbing, a large crowd of students, parents, and passersby had gathered outside the school. Some parents expressed frustration at the lack of communication from the school, having to rely on texts and calls from their children for information. The school later sent a message to parents stating that an ‘incident’ had occurred but everyone was safe.
The Ongoing Investigation
Det Ch Supt Jonathan Chadwickhead of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, emphasized the seriousness of the charges against the young girl. He stated that the investigation is ongoing and that they continue to support the victims, their families, and the wider school community. Detectives are keeping an open mind regarding the motivation behind the attack.
Ch Supt David Meeneythe city of Manchester’s district commander, mentioned that further information had come to light, prompting the involvement of the counter-terrorism unit. He assured the public that there is no information to indicate any further threat and encouraged anyone with concerns to speak to the local officers.
The Court Appearance
The 14-year-old suspect appeared via videolink at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday. She was charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of possessing a bladed article on school premises. The case was transferred to the Crown Courtand the girl was remanded in youth detention. She is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on June 19.
During the brief hearing, the court heard that the teacher, Maysum Abdullah, suffered a wound to his neck. However, all three injured parties have been released from the hospital with no serious injuries. The defendant spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth, and address.
District Judge Briony Clarke noted the seriousness of the charges and the need to send the matter to the Crown Court. The teenager will remain in youth detention accommodation until her next appearance.
