In a landmark move that has sent shockwaves through the women’s soccer world, Sam Kerr the captain of the Australian national team, has announced her return to Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The deal, which extends through the 2030 season, marks a significant chapter in the career of one of the sport’s most decorated players.
Kerr’s journey back to Gotham FC is not just a professional move but a deeply personal one. Having previously played for the club, then known as Sky Blue FC from 2015 to 2017, her return is a full-circle moment that resonates with her past and future aspirations.
An emotional homecoming
Kerr’s excitement about rejoining Gotham FC is palpable. In a press release, she expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m incredibly excited to return to Gotham FC and to this city. This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special.“
The striker’s connection to the club runs deep, and her return is seen as a landmark moment for Gotham FC. Yael Averbuch West, the club’s president of soccer operations, highlighted Kerr’s impact, calling her “one of the defining players of her generation” and a “game-changing talent” who has consistently delivered at the highest levels of world football.
Reuniting with familiar faces
Kerr’s move to Gotham FC also means a reunion with several former Chelsea teammates, including Guro ReitenJess Carter and Ann-Katrin Berger. This familiar environment is expected to facilitate a smooth transition and enhance the team’s performance.
Reflecting on her decision, Kerr shared more insights on the Mewis Squared podcast, co-hosted by her wife, Kristie Mewis. She joked about winning Golden Boots in the NWSL off fast food and expressed her wife’s eagerness to return to the east coast. “Kristie’s been dying to be back on the east coast“, Kerr revealed, adding, “We’re literally going back to my old neighbourhood, which is crazy.”
A legacy of success
Kerr’s illustrious career includes numerous accolades, such as winning five WSL titles three FA Cups and three League Cups with Chelsea. She also reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League final and was the runner-up for the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or. Her impressive goal-scoring record, including 116 goals for Chelsea, ties her with Fran Kirby as the club’s record goal scorer.
Despite leaving the NWSL in 2019, Kerr remains the league’s all-time leading regular-season goalscorer with 77 goals. Her winning mentality and ability to decide matches in an instant make her a valuable addition to Gotham FC’s roster.
The exact timing of Kerr’s debut for Gotham FC is yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to be after the transfer window opens on 14 July. The club is set to face the Washington Spirit the following day, on 15 July marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for both Kerr and Gotham FC.
