The world of professional football has been shaken by a recent study that sheds light on the long-term health consequences faced by former NFL players. The research, conducted by Mass General Brigham, Boston University, and the Concussion + CTE Foundation, reveals that at least one in four former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2026 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head injuries.
The study analyzed the brains of 235 former players, finding that 215 of them had CTE. This condition, which can only be definitively diagnosed post-mortem, is associated with symptoms such as difficulty with attention and memory, dementia, mood disorders, and headaches. The findings underscore the urgent need for preventive measures to reduce repetitive head impacts across all levels of the sport.
The Prevalence of CTE Among Former NFL Players
The study’s lead author, Dr. Daniel Daneshvar, chair of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Mass General Brigham and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, emphasized that repeated traumatic brain injuries are a known factor in elevated rates of neurodegenerative disease. The research found that NFL players have about a four times higher rate of death from neurodegenerative disease than the general population.
Dr. Daneshvar noted that the bulk of the head impacts experienced by former NFL players did not occur at the NFL level but rather at the collegiate, high school, and youth levels. ‘All of those cumulative hits to the head added up to result in an increased risk,’ he said. The study highlights the importance of implementing preventive measures at all levels of the sport to reduce the long-term health risks for athletes.
The NFL’s Response and Preventive Measures
The NFL has responded to the study by reiterating its commitment to making the game safer. An NFL spokesperson stated, ‘The NFL continuously strives to make the game of football safer, including by implementing strategies to reduce concussions and head impacts.’ The league has introduced various measures, such as limiting the number of contact practices during the season and banning full-contact tackling during practices in the Ivy League.
Dr. Daneshvar urged the propagation of these safety measures to the collegiate, high school, and youth levels. ‘We know that nearly 70% of head impacts are occurring in practice,’ he said. ‘Without changing a single minute of game time at any of those levels, we can be substantially reducing the cumulative head impact burden that these individuals are experiencing throughout their lives.’
The Impact on High-Profile Players
The study’s findings are particularly poignant given the high-profile cases of former NFL players who were found to have CTE after their deaths. Players like Junior Seau, Dave Duerson, and Aaron Hernandez, who all took their own lives, were diagnosed with CTE post-mortem. These cases highlight the severe neurological and behavioral symptoms associated with the disease and the urgent need for further research and preventive measures.
Dr. Daneshvar emphasized the importance of current and former athletes experiencing cognitive symptoms seeking evaluation from neurodegenerative disease experts. The study’s findings serve as a stark reminder of the long-term health risks associated with repeated head injuries in professional football and the need for continued efforts to make the sport safer for all athletes.
