The Southern Hibearnation has returned to Melbourne, bringing together fabulously fat, furry, queer bears and their admirers for a week of unforgettable events. Since its inception in 1998, this annual gathering has been a highlight for the bear community, offering a mix of free and ticketed events that cater to both locals and international visitors.

This year’s theme, piratessets the stage for a memorable celebration. The event kicked off with an opening party and aqua aerobics, drawing in a record number of participants. VicBears president Neil Harvey shared his excitement, noting that the Aqua Bear event saw a remarkable turnout of 48 people. “The poor instructor stepping into that on their Sunday morning,” he laughed, “but everyone was loving every minute.”

The Heart of Southern Hibearnation: Community and Connection

While the parties are a significant draw, Southern Hibearnation is much more than just a series of events. It’s a community hub where bears and their admirers can connect, socialize, and celebrate their identities. Neil Harvey emphasized the importance of this aspect, stating, “We have our usual major events, obviously, people come down to party, but this year the VicBears committee have really worked hard to bring a good blend of partying and socialising.”

The opening weekend was filled with activities that fostered community connection, from a cruise from Williamstown Harbour to pirate-themed trivia at The Laird. The event also featured a gay history walking tour and a sold-out underwear party, showcasing the diverse range of experiences available to attendees.

Music, Dance, and the Mr Australasia Bear Competition

The event kicked off with a bang thanks to Brisbane DJ Galleon (Mitch Medcalf)who traveled to Melbourne to perform at the opening event. “I was so excited to be asked to come down to play and to road trip down with Archie Arsenic for such a monumental year,” Mitch said. His personal mixes were a hit, with attendees praising the perfect blend of good music and a volume that allowed for socializing.

One of the highlights of the week is the Mr Australasia Bear Competitionwhere six titleholders from Australia and New Zealand will compete for the coveted title. The competition is not just about individual glory; it’s an opportunity for the titleholders to represent their communities and celebrate their identities.
