Free Sports Activities for Children and Young People in Scotland This Summer

From East Dunbartonshire to Orkney, Scotland is buzzing with free sports activities for young people this summer, fostering active lifestyles and community engagement.

Free Sports Activities for Children and Young People in Scotland This Summer

Across Scotland, the summer of 2026 is set to be a vibrant celebration of sport and physical activity, with numerous initiatives aimed at engaging children and young people. Inspired by major sporting events like the FIFA World Cup and the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, communities are coming together to offer free activities and support local clubs. This nationwide effort is not only about keeping young people active during the holidays but also about fostering a lifelong love for sport and healthy living.

The Summer of Sport initiative is a testament to the power of collaboration between local councils, sportscotland and community organizations. With significant investment from the Scottish Government, these programs are designed to be inclusive, accessible, and most importantly, fun. Whether it’s swimming, football, or trying a new sport like fencing, there’s something for everyone.

East Dunbartonshire: A Summer of Free Activities

In East Dunbartonshire the Summer of Sport program is in full swing, offering a variety of free activities at leisure centres across the region. From 26 June to 16 August, children and young people can enjoy free swimming, court, and pitch bookings. The initiative is designed to make sports accessible and enjoyable for all, with a strong focus on inclusivity and community engagement.

Free Swimming and Court Bookings

Young people aged 0-17, or those in school in East Dunbartonshire, can swim for free in participating pools. This initiative, inspired by the success of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, encourages young people to stay active and have fun in the water. Additionally, families can book a variety of courts and pitches for free, including badminton, pickleball, football, and tennis. Equipment is available for loan, although participants are advised to bring their own footballs. Bookings can be made in-person or by phone up to 24 hours in advance, ensuring flexibility and convenience.

Supporting Local Clubs and Young People

The Summer of Sport initiative extends beyond free activities, with a strong focus on supporting local sports clubs and providing opportunities for young people to get involved in the community. Local sports clubs in East Dunbartonshire are encouraged to participate by offering reduced-cost or free activities for children and young people. To access this funding, clubs must complete the Club Approval process, with support available from the organizing team.

Young people aged 16-26 are invited to volunteer in sport or enhance their CVs through free training opportunities. These opportunities are available across a wide variety of sports until the end of March, providing valuable experience and skills for the future.

Orkney: Bringing Sport to Island Communities

In the Orkney Islands, the Summer of Sport initiative is bringing a wide variety of activities to communities across the archipelago. Backed by a share of a £20 million Scottish Government investment, Orkney Islands Council has secured £51,000 to provide free sporting opportunities for children and young people throughout the summer months.

Inclusive Sessions and Community Engagement

The program, inspired by this year’s FIFA World Cup and the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, offers activities ranging from football, athletics, and hockey to fencing, netball, and swimming. Dedicated inclusive sessions ensure opportunities are available to as many young people as possible. Activities will take place at venues including Kirkwall Grammar School, Stromness Swimming Pool, and a number of primary schools, with organizers also taking sessions directly into island communities.

Forbes Dunlop, Chief Executive of sportscotland, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “At sportscotland, we believe that sport has the power to strengthen communities and change lives. The 2026 Summer of Sport campaign, made possible by Scottish Government investment, is a great example of what can be achieved when partners come together with a shared ambition to make sport more inclusive and accessible.”

Long-Term Benefits and Community Impact

Beyond the immediate benefits of exercise and recreation, organizers hope the program will help inspire long-term participation in sport, strengthen local clubs, and create opportunities for young people to discover activities they may continue enjoying for years to come. Councillor Ivan Taylor, Vice Chair of Orkney Islands Council’s Education, Communities and Housing Committee, expressed delight in being part of the initiative, hoping that as many children and young people as possible take the chance to get active and try something new.

Surrey Heath: Free Summer Sports and Activity Sessions

In Surrey Heath, the popular free summer sports and activity sessions are back, offering a wide range of fun and engaging activities designed to help children stay active, build confidence, and try something new. Funded by Places Leisure Camberley and delivered in partnership with Playball and a number of local sports clubs, the program provides a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for children of all abilities to get involved.

Booking Information and Participating Clubs

Sessions are only available to children and families living in Surrey Heath, with spaces limited and varying by session. Early booking is strongly recommended. Participating clubs include Camberley Judo Club, Playball, Surrey Rams Basketball, Generation Gymnastics, Camberley Town Youth Football Club, Maximus Boxing Gym, and Frimley Phoenix Cricket Club.

Councillor Morgan Rise, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Recreation at Surrey Heath Borough Council, expressed delight in offering these free sessions, highlighting the opportunity for children to stay active during the holidays, learn new skills, and have fun with others in their community.

With such a wide range of sports and activities on offer this summer, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get involved. Whether you’re looking to stay active, meet new people, or support your local community, the Summer of Sport has something for everyone.
