In a heartwarming tale of love and career, Manchester’s beloved drag icon Banksie is making a significant move across the globe. The Drag Race UK star is trading the bustling streets of Manchester for the vibrant city of Melbourne, all in the name of love and a flourishing drag career.
The 7-foot supermodel and internationally acclaimed entertainer is set to make their Australian debut at the renowned queer art party, HONCHO DISKO marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
Love Conquers All
The driving force behind Banksie’s relocation is their love for an Australian named Tino. “I stupidly fell in love with an Australian three years ago,” Banksie shared. The couple had built a life together, but visa constraints and family obligations led to a temporary separation. “That’s the main reason, but also the UK politically is feeling quite scary at the moment,” Banksie added.
This move coincides with Banksie’s 10th anniversary as a drag entertainer. “I thought, you know, is this my Saturn’s return? Is this my chance to try something new in a new place?” they reflected. Australia offers Banksie the opportunity to have it all: career, love, life, and security.
Banksie’s Australian Debut
Banksie’s first performance in Australia will be at the re-opened The Smith Street Hotel as part of the HONCHO DISKO event. “I’m so excited to be premiering at HONCHO DISKO,” Banksie expressed. “Especially at such an iconic queer arts entertainment night.”
The night will be hosted by Belinda Greed, with performances by Australia’s leading provocateurs Scarlett So Hung Son, Jandruze, and Archie Arsenic. DJs Homoego, John Pants, and Mothafunk will keep the dance floor alive.
The Packing Dilemma
Moving countries is a challenge, but for a drag entertainer like Banksie, it’s a unique puzzle. “Those who saw me on Drag Race UK would know my outfits were huge,” Banksie laughed. “I bought all of them, so it’s been difficult deciding what goes into storage and what comes with me.”
Banksie is bringing three of their performance acts, wigs, undergarments, and hosting dresses. “It’s allowed me to really think: what is a necessity? What is something I need rather than something I want?” they shared, likening the process to Marie Kondoing their drag life.
Embracing Australian Culture
Having toured Australia’s east coast last year, Banksie is no stranger to the country. “I got to meet some idols of the Australian drag scene who I adore,” they said. Banksie is excited to explore the diverse drag scenes across different states.
When it comes to Australian food, Banksie has a preference. “My other half really likes to have Vegemite on toast with butter. I tried it once; I don’t get the vibe. What I do love is Shapes, particularly the barbecue flavour and pizza flavour. I’ll go more Shapes than Vegemite,” they confessed.
A Future on Drag Race Down Under?
With Drag Race Down Under vs the World currently airing on STAN could Banksie see themselves appearing in a second season? “I would not be turning my nose up at the opportunity of going back on Drag Race,” they said. “Especially on Down Under vs the World, season one, absolutely amazing.”
Banksie expressed interest in sharing the stage with artists like Mandy Moobs and Kween Kong, envisioning a unique blend of Australian and English drag.
