In a bold move to safeguard transgender youth healthcare, California Governor Gavin Newsom has approved a $26 million fund as part of the state’s 2026–2027 budget. This investment comes in response to significant federal funding cuts imposed by the Trump administration on California’s Medicaid program, particularly targeting healthcare services for transgender individuals under 18.
The fund, announced in late June, aims to ensure that critical healthcare services remain accessible to transgender youth across the state. This initiative underscores California’s commitment to supporting marginalized communities, even in the face of adversity.
California’s Defiance Against Federal Cuts
The $26 million allocation is part of a broader budget package designed to mitigate the impact of federal cuts. An additional $30 million has been earmarked to address funding gaps for healthcare providers affected by the Trump administration’s decisions. This dual investment highlights California’s proactive stance in protecting vulnerable populations.
Kathy Moehlig director of TransFamily Support Services emphasized the significance of this investment. She noted that the fund will not only keep care accessible but also support the providers delivering lifesaving services. ‘This historic investment will help keep care accessible, support the providers doing this lifesaving work, and remind trans young people that California will not abandon them,’ Moehlig stated.
Newsom’s Vision for a Balanced Budget
Governor Newsom’s approval of the fund aligns with his vision of a balanced budget that prioritizes both fiscal responsibility and social welfare. In a statement, Newsom challenged the long-held notion that governments must choose between balancing the books and investing in people. ‘For decades, we’ve been told that government has to choose between balancing the books and investing in people. California proved that’s a false choice,’ he asserted.
Newsom further highlighted that the budget reflects years of disciplined financial decisions, which have built historic reserves, paid down debt, and strengthened the state’s economy. ‘We’re leaving California stronger than we found it – and leaving the next generation a state that’s fiscally sound, economically dominant and ready for whatever comes next,’ he added.
LGBTQ+ Advocates Celebrate Historic Victory
The budget has been met with widespread acclaim from LGBTQ+ advocates, who view it as a historic victory amid relentless attacks on LGBTQ+ communities nationwide. Joe Hollendoner CEO of the Los Angeles LGBT Center described the budget as one of the most significant LGBTQ+ policy victories in California’s history.
Hollendoner emphasized that the investments will save lives, expand access to healthcare and housing, and strengthen the institutions that LGBTQ+ communities rely on. ‘California has chosen a different path – one rooted in dignity, compassion and action,’ he said, underscoring the state’s commitment to protecting and empowering its diverse populations.
As California continues to lead by example, this historic investment serves as a beacon of hope for transgender youth and their families, demonstrating that compassion and fiscal responsibility can go hand in hand.
