How a Fire Emoji Led to Love: Brendan Maclean and Richard Chadwick's Story

In the digital age, love can spark in the most unexpected ways. For musician Brendan Maclean and drag superstar Richard Chadwicka simple emoji on Instagram was the catalyst for a beautiful relationship. Their story, shared with The Guardianis a testament to the power of connection and serendipity.

Brendan, a Sydney-based singer-songwriter, had no idea that his life was about to change when he posted an obscure track by his “gay uncle” Paul Mac on Instagram. Little did he know that this post would lead him to the love of his life.

An Unexpected Connection

The year was 2026 when Karen from Finance, Richard’s alter ego and a star from Drag Race Down Underresponded to Brendan’s post with a fire emoji. Brendan, initially surprised that a drag queen would listen to indie music, was intrigued and decided to follow Richard’s account.

What followed was a period of online connection that Brendan describes as a “bubbling” between the two. However, their paths didn’t cross in person until a chance encounter in Melbourne. As the 2026 Melbourne Fringe Festival approached, Brendan found himself staying with a friend in the city. It was here that fate intervened.

The Chance Encounter

While browsing GrindrBrendan was taken aback to see a familiar face at zero meters away. It turned out that Richard, known to him only as Karen from Finance, was his friend’s flatmate. Eager to meet Richard in person for the first time, Brendan resorted to some creative tactics to get his attention.

“I casually kicked open the door of the spare room I was in, hoping to catch him wandering by,” Brendan recalled. “When that didn’t work, I started marching loudly around the house trying to get his attention.” Little did Brendan know, Richard was nursing a severe hangover at the time.

Brendan’s persistence paid off when Richard finally emerged from his room. It was the first time Brendan had seen Richard out of drag, and the moment was unforgettable. “He had this beautiful warm smile, and I threw my arms open at the sight of him,” Brendan said. “I knew as we were locked in that first firm embrace I was going to fall for him.”

A Love Story Unfolds

Their love story is a beautiful blend of digital connection and real-life serendipity. From an Instagram emoji to a chance encounter, Brendan and Richard’s relationship is a testament to the unexpected ways love can find us.

Brendan’s full piece, shared with The Guardianoffers a heartwarming glimpse into their journey. For those eager to experience Brendan’s talent live, he will be performing at the Sydney Opera House in the cabaret production Velvet Inferno from July 24.
