How KPop Demon Hunters writer Hannah McMechan embraced her bisexual identity

In the world of cinema, stories often resonate with creators in profound, unexpected ways. For Hannah McMechanco-writer of the acclaimed film KPop Demon Huntersthe screenplay became a mirror reflecting her personal journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

McMechan’s path to embracing her bisexual identity unfolded alongside the film’s development, with each draft taking on new significance as she navigated her own coming out process. This journey, filled with introspection and emotional growth, ultimately led her to see the film through a lens she had not initially anticipated.

An unintentional parallel

McMechan began working on KPop Demon Hunters with her writing partner Danya Jimenez in 2026. At the time, she was unaware of her own queer identity. The pandemic, a period of global introspection, became a catalyst for her self-discovery. Over the next two years, she came out to her friends and, in 2026, to her religious family.

Remarkably, her personal journey mirrored that of the film’s protagonist, Rumia KPop singer and demon hunter grappling with her half-demon identity. McMechan found an ironic accuracy in Rumi’s struggle, as she too felt shame and fear about revealing her true self. “I was having this journey with my sexuality and not wanting to tell anyone and feeling ashamed of it,” McMechan shared.

Each revision of the script took on a new meaning for McMechan, reflecting her evolving personal landscape. However, she insists that the parallels were unintentional. “I wasn’t like, ‘Hey, here’s my queer journey. Let’s put it in,’” she clarified. Yet, she acknowledges that her experiences likely influenced the writing, even if subconsciously.

A resonant scene

One scene in particular struck a chord with McMechan in hindsight. In the film’s climax, Rumi confronts her adoptive mother, Celineseeking acceptance of her true identity. Celine’s response—offering to “fix” and “hide” Rumi’s half-demon traits—left Rumi heartbroken. This scene echoed McMechan’s own experiences with her religious mother, who struggled to accept her daughter’s sexuality.

“It just took on such a different meaning,” McMechan said, her voice heavy with emotion. “This literally feels how I feel with my mum because she’s so religious.” She described the scene as a poignant reflection of the queer experiencewhere loved ones may offer to “fix” rather than accept. McMechan’s mother, still grappling with the revelation, often asks if her daughter’s sexuality is merely a “phase.”

Despite the challenges, McMechan finds solace in the film’s message and the resonance it has with queer audiences. “There’s no group of people happier than a bunch of queer people dressed up as these girls,” she noted, appreciating the film’s impact on the community.

A bright future

The success of KPop Demon Hunters has been monumental, earning two Academy AwardsGolden GlobesCritics’ Choice Awardsand even a Grammy. McMechan’s professional life is flourishing as well. She is currently co-writing Attack Of the 50 Ft. Woman with Jimenez, starring Margot Robbie and directed by Tim Burton.

Additionally, McMechan and Jimenez are working on a “queer western” passion project, hoping to secure Lily Wachowski as director. They are also eagerly awaiting the call to return to the KPop Demon Hunters universe for its confirmed sequel.

McMechan’s journey, both personal and professional, serves as a testament to the power of storytelling. Through KPop Demon Huntersshe found a narrative that resonated deeply with her experiences, offering a beacon of hope and representation for the Queer Community.
