In the face of South Africa’s staggering youth unemployment rate of 60.9% among 15-24 year-olds, Nozuko Mzamo has developed an innovative solution to bridge the gap between education and employment. Her Global Student Support Platform (GSSP) app aims to streamline the often fragmented journey from school to work, offering a comprehensive suite of tools for young people navigating this challenging transition.
The app addresses a critical need in South Africa, where many young people who have completed their matric exams find themselves without clear pathways to further education or employment. The high costs of further education and the lack of accessible information about bursaries and job opportunities create significant barriers for underprivileged students.
Addressing the Fragmentation of Education and Employment Systems
Mzamo identifies the root of the problem in the fragmented nature of South Africa’s education and employment systems. She explains that different institutions handle different aspects of the process in isolation: universities manage admissions, NSFAS handles funding, Setas oversee skills development, and companies manage recruitment. This fragmentation places an unfair burden on young people who lack the social capital to navigate the system effectively.
“The system assumes a level of social capital that millions simply don’t have,” Mzamo states. “If you’re a first-generation student from a rural village or township, you probably don’t know what questions to ask, let alone which portal to visit.”
The Comprehensive Solution Offered by GSSP
The GSSP app provides a bold and simple solution: a single, free platform that covers the entire journey from choosing what to study, finding funding, and accessing psychosocial support to securing that first job. In its private beta phase, the platform attracted over 4,200 users, with more than 1,300 click-throughs to bursaries and over 2,100 to job listings.
One of the most innovative aspects of GSSP is its inclusion of psychosocial support. Mzamo recognizes that youth unemployment is not just an economic issue but also an identity crisis. When young people send out numerous CVs without receiving feedback, they often internalize the rejection, believing “the problem is me.” The app’s psychosocial support services aim to counteract this harmful narrative.
Breaking Down Barriers to Access
While the GSSP platform offers a promising solution, Mzamo acknowledges that data costs remain a significant barrier. “That is the barrier I lose the most sleep over,” she admits. “We can build the best platform, and if a young person can’t afford the data to access it, we’ve solved nothing.”
To address this challenge, GSSP is exploring partnerships and innovative solutions to make the platform more accessible to all South African youth, regardless of their economic circumstances.
Expanding Horizons Beyond Local Opportunities
What makes GSSP truly radical is its refusal to accept South Africa’s capacity constraints as the end of anyone’s story. The platform surfaces international exchange programs, global scholarships, and work pathways abroad, recognizing that for many young people, opportunities beyond their home country may be a necessity rather than a luxury.
“When the local system reaches its ceiling, our young people need to know the world is bigger than what’s available at home,” Mzamo emphasizes. This forward-thinking approach opens up new possibilities for South African youth seeking to build their futures.
The Impact and Future of GSSP
The proof of GSSP’s effectiveness is compelling. Across Mzamo’s edtech’s Ukiyo-administered programs, 85% of participants are employed within three months of graduation. This impressive statistic has opened boardroom doors, attracting partners such as Thrive Accommodation, The LINK by Airlink, and Emeris.
For Mzamo, the ultimate measure of success is seeing a cohort of young people from underserved communities move from accessing GSSP to securing bursaries, graduating, and finding employment—all while maintaining their dignity. As South Africa continues to grapple with high youth unemployment rates, innovative solutions like GSSP offer hope and practical support for the country’s young people.
