Join DIVA’s editorial team as a part-time sub-editor

DIVA invites detail‑oriented editors to shape queer stories in a flexible remote position.

Join DIVA’s editorial team as a part-time sub-editor

DIVA magazine has been a cornerstone of queer culture for more than three decades, delivering stories, interviews and visual features that celebrate LGBTQIA+ lives. Recently, the publication transitioned to a charitable structure under the DIVA Charitable Trust reinforcing its commitment to community-driven journalism. To keep the momentum going, the outlet is expanding its editorial bench with a specialised freelance role.

The opportunity is a part-time, remote sub-editor contract, structured as five working days every two months. Candidates will join a diverse team of writers, designers and activists who share a passion for inclusive media. While the position is home-based, occasional meet-ups are organised for collaborative sessions and team bonding.

Role overview and core responsibilities

The appointed sub-editor will act as the final gatekeeper for each piece that reaches DIVA’s pages. Key duties include meticulous copy-editing for spelling, grammar, punctuation and adherence to the magazine’s distinctive tone. Fact-checking is essential to ensure every claim is verifiable, and the editor must also screen content for potential legal concerns. When needed, the sub-editor will reshape prose to improve flow, adjust length for layout constraints and craft compelling headlines, stand-firsts, captions and pull-quotes. Layout work is performed in Adobe InDesign where the editor must align text blocks, images and graphics to maintain a cohesive visual identity.

Beyond the page-level tasks, the role involves direct communication with contributors via email to resolve any copy issues and ongoing liaison with the chief editor regarding recurring challenges. Maintaining and evolving the DIVA house style guide also falls under the sub-editor’s remit, ensuring consistency across all future publications.

Candidate profile and required expertise

Ideal applicants possess a razor-sharp eye for detail and at least one year of experience in a fast-paced print environment or an equivalent digital newsroom. Proficiency with InDesign is non-negotiable, as is a calm demeanor when juggling tight deadlines. A broad cultural literacy—especially regarding contemporary LGBTQIA+ issues—will enable the editor to make nuanced judgment calls about tone and relevance.

Technical competencies include a solid grasp of current media law, enabling the sub-editor to flag potential libel or copyright risks. Creative flair is also prized; the ability to devise punchy, inclusive headlines that capture readers’ attention is a daily requirement. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, ensure smooth interactions with a geographically dispersed team. Above all, a genuine enthusiasm for queer culture drives the commitment to produce content that resonates with DIVA’s audience.

Application process and key dates

Interested editors should forward a current CV and a personalized cover letter to editorial@. The cover letter must explain why the candidate is drawn to DIVA’s mission and highlight the specific qualities that make them the perfect fit for the sub-editing role. All applications are due by 14 October after which the editorial team will review submissions and arrange interviews with shortlisted candidates.

Successful applicants will embark on a flexible, four-day work cycle every two months, with remuneration discussed individually based on experience and portfolio strength. This arrangement offers a rare blend of creative influence, professional development and the freedom to work from any location. For those eager to contribute to a pioneering LGBTQIA+ publication while honing their editorial craft, DIVA presents a compelling platform.
