Lara Raj and Megan Skiendiel open up about bisexuality and fan reactions

The members of the popular group Katseye have always been vocal about their support for the LGBTQ+ community. However, members Lara Raj and Megan Skiendiel recently opened up about the unique challenges they face regarding public perceptions of their sexuality.

In an interview with Allure Lara and Megan discussed the backlash they receive from some fans who question their bisexual and queer identities based on their dating history. The conversation shed light on the broader issue of bisexual erasure and the need for greater understanding and acceptance.

Navigating public perceptions of sexuality

Lara, who came out as queer last year, emphasized that her attraction to all genders is a core part of her identity. She stated, “I like everyone. I will date anyone. I think people really try to invalidate that because of who we currently or have publicly dated.”

Megan, who came out as bisexual in June last year, echoed Lara’s sentiments. She highlighted the importance of acknowledging her past relationships with women, saying, “I came out as bisexual, but me dating men doesn’t take that away from me. My first relationship was with a girl, but [the fans] don’t know that.”

Both members stressed the need for individuals to express their true selves without fear of judgment. Megan asserted, “I feel like people should just be able to be who they are no matter what. When it comes to race, identity, whatever, if that’s who you are, then be who the f*** you are and no one should take that away from you.”

The impact of bisexual erasure

The interview sparked a wave of reactions from fans, many of whom shared their own experiences with bisexual erasure. One fan expressed frustration, saying, “I’m so p***** off being a bisexual woman and having to justify and defend your orientation to everyone all the time, it’s just that we don’t owe anyone anything.”

Others highlighted the prevalence of biphobia within and outside the queer community. Comments such as “Never let people tell you that biphobia isn’t a thing!” and “And people still think biphobia and bi erasure isn’t a thing” underscored the ongoing struggle for acceptance and understanding.

A fan echoed Megan’s sentiments, stating, “She’s so right it’s so tiring with how even the majority of the queer community get so comfortable being biphobic just because a bi woman is dating a man.” Another fan remarked, “I swear, it’s so surreal that they have to explain the bare minimum.”

The positive responses also highlighted the importance of open conversations about queer identities. One fan noted, “I love these dives talking openly about being queer, that’s exactly what we need!”

Katseye’s commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy

Katseye, which includes members Sophia LafortezaDaniela Avanzini and Manon Bannerman (currently on hiatus), has consistently used its platform to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. The group featured trans models like Vivian Wilson in their “Pinky Up” video and celebrated Pride Month with thoughtful gestures, such as member Yoonchae gifting Lara a special present.

The group’s commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy extends beyond their music and public appearances. By openly discussing their experiences with bisexual erasure and biphobia Lara and Megan are contributing to a broader dialogue about the complexities of queer identities and the need for greater acceptance.
