New annual Lesbian History Day announced for 6 September

A new annual day on 6 September will honour lesbian pioneers, activists and culture through events worldwide

A trustee of the DIVA Charitable Trust has unveiled a new annual observance: Lesbian History Day, to be held each year on 6 September. The day is meant as a public moment for remembering, teaching and celebrating lesbian lives—stories that organisers say have too often been sidelined or erased from mainstream histories.

Rather than a single event, Lesbian History Day will act as an umbrella for a wide range of activities. Schools, libraries, museums, community groups and grassroots organisations are being invited to stage workshops, oral‑history sessions, panel discussions, exhibitions and local meet‑ups. Digital programming—livestreamed talks, virtual exhibits and social campaigns—will extend reach beyond major cities and help include rural and diaspora communities.

Organisers, led by trustee Marie‑Helene Tyack and the DIVA Charitable Trust, frame the initiative as both corrective and generative. By foregrounding lesser‑known figures in arts, science and activism, the programme aims not only to fill gaps in the public record but to inspire younger generations and strengthen community ties across ages. Archivists and cultural institutions are being encouraged to prioritise preservation projects—collecting photographs, recordings and documents that might otherwise be lost.

Practical benefits are also part of the pitch. Schools can use the date to plan lesson plans and library displays; museums can mount focused exhibitions; activists can link historical campaigns to current struggles for legal rights, healthcare and social inclusion. Organisers say local partners will tailor activities to community needs and that teams will consult with elders and handle personal materials ethically.

Those interested in taking part are asked to register with the DIVA Charitable Trust via a dedicated email address or the day’s official social accounts. The trust will coordinate schedules, distribute promotional materials and answer logistical questions to help small groups and large institutions alike join the programme.

No public‑safety concerns have been reported in connection with the planned events. Further details about programming and ways to participate will be published through the DIVA Charitable Trust’s channels as plans develop.

Lesbian History Day aims to make lesbian experiences a recurring part of the cultural calendar—an annual prompt to remember the past, celebrate creativity and resilience, and push for fuller recognition in the present.
