Unified LGBTQ+ support urged for Conversion Practices Bill

Stonewall launches a campaign urging every LGBTQ+ supporter to pressure MPs and safeguard the Conversion Practices Bill.

Unified LGBTQ+ support urged for Conversion Practices Bill

The Conversion Practices Bill is currently navigating the pre-legislative stage, a critical window where its final shape is still being debated. Advocacy group Stonewall has seized this moment to rally the LGBTQ+ community around a coordinated effort: writing to Members of Parliament (MPs) to defend the bill exactly as drafted.

While the legislation aims to outlaw the harmful act of conversion practices—methods that seek to alter a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity—certain parliamentary factions are attempting to dilute the bill’s explicit, trans-inclusive language. These groups argue that existing protections are sufficient, yet their amendments would weaken safeguards for the most vulnerable.

Why the draft matters to survivors of conversion practices

For anyone who has endured the unthinkable horror of conversion practices or has been threatened with such interventions, the legislation represents a lifeline. Simon Blake, CEO of Stonewall, told Gay Times, “This Bill is so important for anyone who has ever undergone the unthinkable horror of Conversion Practices and anyone who has ever been offered them.” He added that this alone should compel the whole LGBTQ+ community to stand unequivocally behind the measure.

Trans-inclusive language faces erosion in parliamentary scrutiny

During the current phase of scrutiny, several lawmakers have signalled intentions to remove or soften clauses that explicitly protect transgender and non-binary people. Critics of the bill claim that the broader LGBTQ+ protections already cover trans individuals, but Stonewall disputes this, noting that the proposed language is essential for clear, enforceable rights. The potential watering-down threatens to leave a legal gap that could allow covert forms of discrimination to persist.

Stonewall mobilises the LGBTQ+ community for a coordinated lobbying effort

In response, Stonewall has launched a nationwide campaign urging supporters to email or call their MPs before the bill proceeds further. The organisation emphasises that a unified, loud voice from the LGBTQ+ community can out-weigh the dissenting few. Blake warned, “There are some people who oppose the Bill because they do not believe in the rights and freedoms of everyone in the LGBTQ+ community or believe that existing legislation is good enough. I disagree, but their voices are loud.” By flooding parliamentary inboxes, activists hope to cement the bill’s original, robust provisions.

With the deadline for amendments looming, the call to action is clear: every ally, survivor, and advocate must reach out to their representatives. The survival of the Conversion Practices Bill in its current, fully protective form hinges on collective pressure, ensuring that conversion-therapy is outlawed for all, regardless of gender identity.
