Will Young, the acclaimed singer-songwriter and former Pop Idol winner, has bravely shared his experience of being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder during a period of intense emotional turmoil. In a candid conversation on the On The Mend podcast with Matt Willis, Young recounted the harrowing details of his breakdown and the subsequent misdiagnosis that led to years of struggle.
The incident occurred during Young’s run in the West End revival of Cabaret a time that coincided with a difficult breakup. The combination of personal and professional pressures led to a severe emotional crisis, which Young described as a protective dissociation mechanism.
Young’s breakdown and dissociation
Young revealed that he sought help from director Rufus Norris, telling him, “Rufus I don’t want to panic you but I am having an emotional breakdown.” Despite the severity of his condition, Young maintained a sense of hope, stating, “I think I will make it through.” However, his condition worsened as he began to dissociate from reality, a protective response to the trauma he was experiencing.
“It’s a protective mechanism,” Young explained. “I just left my body and suddenly I couldn’t recognise my face in the mirror. It was horrific and I felt like a walking ghost.” This dissociation made it difficult for him to recognize people and experience emotional recall, leaving him feeling detached from his own life.
The misdiagnosis and its impact
During this period, Young was prescribed medication for what was ultimately a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder. “I was completely misdiagnosed as bipolar and I wasn’t bipolar—I had trauma,” he clarified. The incorrect diagnosis and subsequent treatment added another layer of complexity to his already challenging situation.
Young described how the dissociation persisted “until fairly recently,” making life “difficult” for many years. Reflecting on the impact, he said, “For the last 14 years I haven’t really been living if I am honest, I actually don’t know how I’m still here, I really don’t.” This profound statement underscores the depth of his struggle and the resilience required to overcome it.
Recovery and support
Despite the challenges, Young credited his recovery to being in a happy and loving relationship. This support system played a crucial role in his journey back to mental well-being. Young’s openness about his experiences serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of accurate diagnosis and the need for compassionate support in mental health care.
As a prominent LGBTQ+ figure in British entertainment, Young has long been an advocate for mental health awareness. His recent revelations add another layer to his public persona, highlighting his courage and commitment to raising awareness about mental health issues.
