Gold Coast Suns Player Faces Four-Match Ban for Unacceptable Behavior

AFL enforces strict penalties as Gold Coast Suns player Max Knobel receives four-match suspension for homophobic slur during VFL game.

Gold Coast Suns Player Faces Four-Match Ban for Unacceptable Behavior

The Australian Football League (AFL) has taken a firm stance against discriminatory language with the suspension of Gold Coast Suns player Max Knobel. The 21-year-old has been banned for four matches after admitting to using a homophobic slur during a VFL game against the Brisbane Lions last weekend.

The incident, which occurred during the second quarter of the Round 11 VFL clash on June 6, has sparked a broader conversation about the prevalence of such language in Australian football. The AFL’s Integrity Unit conducted a thorough investigation, leading to Knobel’s admission and subsequent penalty.

Knobel’s Admission and Apology

Knobel made full admissions during the investigation, acknowledging his use of a homophobic slur towards a Brisbane Lions opponent. The four-match sanction means Knobel will miss AFL Rounds 14 to 17 and will also be required to undergo further LGBTQIA+ inclusion education.

In a statement, Knobel expressed his remorse and accepted responsibility for his actions. “I have to take responsibility for my actions which were unacceptable,” he said. “I understand the severity of what I said and the impact those comments have on a wide range of people. I’ve offered my apologies to the Brisbane player and would like to extend my sincerest apologies to those who have been impacted by my comments, including those as part of the LGBTIQA+ community.”

The AFL’s Response and Commitment to Inclusion

AFL chief operating officer Tom Harley emphasized the league’s commitment to respect and inclusion across all levels of the game. “Behaviors that do not reflect this will not be tolerated,” Harley stated. “We will continue to stamp out any conduct that does not reflect our values.”

The AFL acknowledged Knobel’s self-reporting and acceptance of responsibility but highlighted the need for continued efforts to address discriminatory behavior. The league’s stance comes amid ongoing concerns about the prevalence of homophobic language in Australian football.

The Broader Context of Homophobia in Australian Football

Knobel’s suspension is the latest in a series of incidents that have put homophobia in Australian football under the spotlight throughout 2026. Earlier this year, St Kilda forward Lance Collard received a nine-match suspension for a homophobic slur, which was later reduced on appeal. The controversy deepened when the AFL Appeals Board suggested that racist, sexist, and homophobic language was “commonplace” in football.

The AFL publicly rejected these comments, which were widely condemned by players, advocates, and the LGBTQIA+ community. In response to the backlash, the AFL dismissed Appeals Board chair Will Houghton KC. However, concerns persist about whether the league is doing enough to create an inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ players, fans, and staff.

Gold Coast Suns chief executive Mark Evans expressed the club’s disappointment, stating that Knobel’s actions did not reflect the club’s values. The incident underscores the ongoing challenge of eliminating discriminatory language from the sport and fostering a more inclusive culture.
