The Northside community is preparing to gather and celebrate the extraordinary life of William Saunders, affectionately known as Bill, at an informal memorial event this Sunday. Bill, a cornerstone of the Northside scene, passed away in April through the Victorian Assisted Dying scheme, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and unite the community.
Known for his vibrant spirit and contributions to the LGBTQ+ community, Bill’s influence extended far beyond his role as the former owner of iconic venues like The Laird, Club 80, The Peel, The Glasshouse, and The Gatehouse. His passing has left a void, but his memory will be honored in a unique and heartfelt manner.
The Informal Memorial Event
This Sunday, June 28, from 1 pm to 4 pm, The Laird will host an informal memorial event in the Nuggets Bar. The event aims to bring together friends, family, and community members to share stories, laughter, and tears as they reflect on Bill’s over-the-top life. The atmosphere will be one of nostalgic reflection and general discussion with minimal speeches to encourage open and heartfelt conversations.
Attendees are required to register for the event, which is open to all genders. Light refreshments and an open-tap bar will be available, with usual restrictions on spirits and top-shelf alcohol. The Laird management reserves the right to refuse entry or service for any reason, ensuring a respectful and safe environment for all.
A Legacy of Support and Community
Bill’s impact on the Northside scene is immeasurable. For over 25 years, he was a central figure, supporting the LGBTQ+ community and raising funds for people living with HIV. His venues became hubs for social interaction, love, and support, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance.
In the early 2000s, after a brush with lung cancer, Bill decided it was time to pass on his legacy to younger individuals. He sold The Peel and Club 80, sharing his thoughts with BNews: “It’s time to pass [the venues] on to younger people.” This decision allowed him to enjoy the latter part of his life while ensuring his venues continued to thrive under new ownership.
Bill soon sold The Laird to Brett Lasham and Mark Carney, who initially had no plans to run a pub. As Lasham told QNews last year, “We kind of fell into the situation.” Despite not seeing themselves as part of the bears or leather crowd, they embraced the opportunity and continued Bill’s legacy with dedication and care.
Remembering Bill’s Impact
Bill’s passing has left a profound impact on those who knew and loved him. Mark Carney shared his sentiments, writing, “If you treated Bill the right way, he treated you the same. It has been a privilege to know Bill as a boss and a dear and close friend. Thank you, you will forever be in my heart.” These words encapsulate the mutual respect and affection that Bill inspired in those around him.
The legacy that Bill has given so many through his venues and the community he helped to thrive is something that will never be forgotten. His memory will continue to inspire and unite the Northside community, ensuring that his spirit lives on.
