The Hybrid Nature of Bark of Millions
Taylor Mac describes this work as a hybrid that defies traditional genres. “This is a hybrid work,” Mac explains. “You could think of it as an opera-concert-song-cycle-musical-performance-art-piece-play. It’s certainly structured like all of those things squished together.” This innovative approach ensures that each performance is a unique experience, blending various artistic elements to create a dynamic spectacle.
Each song in Bark of Millions is inspired by a different queer figure from world history. As Mac notes, “Some you’ll know. Some you won’t.” The aim is to educate and inspire, leaving audiences with a deeper understanding and appreciation of queer history and culture.
A Feast for the Eyes and Ears
The collaboration between Taylor Mac, composer Matt Ray, and costume designer Machine Dazzle results in a visually and auditorily stunning production. The extravagant costumes and original songs create a feast for the senses, making Bark of Millions a must-see event. In addition to the live performances, the Schwarzman Centre will also screen Taylor Mac’s documentary concert film, A 24-Decade History of Popular Music. This film chronicles Mac’s legendary 24-hour stage show, which reimagines 240 years of American history through popular music.
Taylor Mac is a Schwarzman Centre Cultural Fellow for 2026/26, in partnership with Mansfield College. This fellowship underscores the significance of Mac’s work and its impact on contemporary culture.
