Confusion Over Transgenic Mice Leads to Criticism of South Carolina Representative

Nancy Mace's TRANS MICE Act aims to halt federal funding for altering animals' biological sex, but a misunderstanding about transgenic mice has led to widespread mockery.

Confusion Over Transgenic Mice Leads to Criticism of South Carolina Representative

South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace has found herself at the center of a social media storm following the introduction of her TRANS MICE Act. The bill, aimed at preventing federal funds from being used to alter animals’ biological sex, has sparked confusion and criticism due to a misunderstanding about transgenic mice.

The controversy began on 18 June 2026 when Mace announced the bill on X stating that animals should not be used for radical transgender experiments. She claimed that the legislation would end ideological cruelty paid for by American taxpayers and ensure that science serves the public, not ideology.

Misunderstanding Transgenic Mice

A community note quickly clarified that the term trans mice refers to transgenic mice which are used in scientific research to study gene function and disease mechanisms, particularly in cancer research. However, Mace rejected this clarification, insisting that her bill concerns animal experiments related to transgender research.

Mace’s post included an image of a mouse touching a human hand with the words NO TRANS MICE. She wrote, No hormones. No surgeries. No taxpayer dollars spent mutilating animals in the name of transgender ideology. The post received a community note explaining that trans mice refers to transgenic mice, not transgender mice.

Online Mockery and Criticism

The post received widespread mockery and criticism on X with users questioning Mace’s understanding of the scientific terminology. Some users suggested that Mace had gone totally mental while others claimed she had no idea what she was writing about.

One user wrote, They hear trans in any word they think it’s about transgenders while another penned, This proves Republicans elect the dumbest of people. Researchers also chimed in, with one writing that it was objectively one of the funniest things I’ve seen a real-life politician post.

Mace’s History of Anti-Trans Ideologies

This is not the first time Mace has faced criticism over her anti-trans ideologies. In 2026 she referred to trans bathroom ban protesters as tranny protestors and wrongly chased a cisgender woman out of a public restroom.

The TRANS MICE Act has been met with skepticism and ridicule, with many questioning the necessity and understanding behind the legislation. As the debate continues, Mace remains steadfast in her stance, despite the widespread confusion and criticism.
