In a significant political development, former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has broken his silence regarding his resignation, which followed widespread protests led by India’s youth. Pradhan’s remarks shed light on the complexities of the situation and his perspective on the role of the younger generation in the political landscape.
The controversy began with irregularities in the NEET exam, a crucial test for aspiring medical students. The exam was cancelled due to a question paper leak, leading to a wave of protests and, tragically, at least 21 student suicides. Pradhan’s resignation on July 25 was a direct response to these events, aimed at preventing further exploitation of the situation by anti-national forces.
Pradhan’s Perspective on Gen Z
Pradhan addressed the protests and his resignation during a ceremony at GM University in Bhubaneswar. He expressed his belief that Gen Z had been misled by certain individuals during the protests. “Gen Z is our children. Some people attempted to mislead them,” Pradhan stated, emphasizing the importance of understanding and engaging with the younger generation rather than resisting their aspirations.
He also revealed that he had approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi and offered to resign from the Union Council of Ministers. “The post was not important to me,” Pradhan said, highlighting his commitment to the aspirations of India’s youth. He praised Modi for agreeing to acknowledge these aspirations and addressing the issue directly with the protesters.
The Political Fallout and Reactions
The protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had demanded Pradhan’s resignation as a key condition. The situation escalated due to the exam irregularities and the subsequent suicides, which highlighted the immense pressure faced by students.
Pradhan’s resignation note emphasized the need to prevent anti-national forces from exploiting the agitation and to ensure the unity of the country. He also stressed that the government had acted swiftly to address the irregularities, handing the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and conducting a re-examination on June 21.
In his address, Pradhan highlighted the importance of India’s young population, stating that around 20 crore children born in the last decade would play a crucial role in making India a global leader. This focus on engaging with Gen Z aligns with recent efforts by Prime Minister Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat to connect with the younger generation.
Opposition’s Response
The opposition, particularly the BJD has criticized Pradhan’s handling of the protests. BJD’s Sambalpur district president Rohit Pujari accused the BJP government of defaming Pradhan through police actions during the protests. Pujari alleged that the government’s policies had damaged Pradhan’s reputation and that more than 20 students had died by suicide due to the examination controversy.
Pradhan, however, defended his actions and accused former Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik of making defamatory remarks against him. He questioned whether he had ever done anything to shame the people of Odisha, asserting that he had always acted in the state’s best interests.
The political tensions in Sambalpur have been heightened, with BJD workers planning protests against Pradhan. The Sambalpur Police detained around 30 BJD workers as a precautionary measure, anticipating demonstrations by the party’s youth and student wings.
